The Jobs way.

You don't get to build a multibillion dollar company if you don't know what you want.

I am about 25% into Steve Jobs' biography, and everyone the author has quoted till now has the same opinion about him: he was a jerk.

Don't get me wrong, they say a lot of nice things about him too. but mostly, he was a jerk when he had to get things done. He never covered his punches, and always insisted that what he wanted be done.

Guess there's a pretty good advice in there. We compromise because we think our colleagues have done their best, and even though we don't get what we wanted, we smile, nod, and move on to the next task.

Guess what, they'll never do their best if they are not pushed.

I got some good work done when I pushed people.I don't like to argue, and I try do whatever I can with what's given. And every time, someone higher up was unimpressed with the final work.

The worst thing - I knew it could have turned out better, only if I hadn't compromised.

There's no need to be a jerk. You'll be astonished at how accommodating people are if you ask them politely.
